Rubrik, the California-based data security and backup company, is making headlines with its latest acquisition — Predibase, an artificial intelligence startup focused on simplifying the deployment and customization of large language models (LLMs). Although the official deal terms remain confidential, insiders familiar with the negotiations report that the acquisition is valued between $100 million and $500 million.
This move marks a significant leap for Rubrik, which has built its reputation by helping businesses quickly recover from cyberattacks through secure data backup systems. Now, the company is expanding its offerings to address one of the most transformative trends in the tech industry: generative AI.
Founded in 2021, Predibase was established by former Uber engineers Travis Addair and Piero Molino, both of whom played pivotal roles in developing Michelangelo — Uber’s internal ML platform that became a gold standard for enterprise ML infrastructure.
With just 25 employees and over $28 million in venture capital funding from firms like Felicis Ventures and Greylock Partners, Predibase has built a reputation as a lightweight, enterprise-grade platform that allows users to fine-tune open-source LLMs on proprietary data without the high costs and complexity often associated with AI infrastructure. Its client list includes names like Checkr, Marsh McLennan, and Qualcomm.
Post-acquisition, Predibase will continue to operate independently while expanding its capabilities by integrating with Rubrik’s Annapurna platform. This will allow customers to build and run AI agents using corporate data stored across Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, Databricks, Snowflake, and more — all while staying secure and compliant.
Rubrik’s pivot toward AI is timely. With cloud giants like Microsoft, Amazon, and Google driving explosive demand for AI compute through GPU rentals and infrastructure services, enterprise software players are now racing to embed AI into their offerings. Anthropic and OpenAI, for instance, have grown rapidly by monetizing their AI models via APIs and enterprise subscriptions.
Bipul Sinha, CEO of Rubrik, noted, “We’re building Rubrik into a multi-product, multi-generational company. This acquisition isn’t just about staying competitive — it’s about leading the next wave of secure, enterprise-grade AI.”
By fusing Rubrik’s deep expertise in zero-trust data security with Predibase’s advanced model deployment capabilities, the company aims to help customers create domain-specific AI agents that are not only cost-efficient but also compliant with data governance standards.
Rubrik’s financials underscore the momentum behind this move. The company, which went public in April 2024, is currently valued at over $10 billion — nearly three times its IPO valuation. Its annualized revenue exceeds $1 billion, and it has consistently outperformed Wall Street expectations since listing.
This acquisition is widely viewed by analysts as a calculated effort to diversify its product suite and solidify its foothold in a rapidly evolving AI landscape, where access to proprietary data and secure model deployment are key differentiators.
As generative AI moves from experimentation to enterprise implementation, the need for scalable, secure, and data-compliant infrastructure is becoming mission-critical. Rubrik’s acquisition of Predibase positions the company at the intersection of two powerful trends — cybersecurity and AI.
The integration of Predibase into Rubrik’s ecosystem signals a broader transformation within the enterprise software sector: moving beyond storage and protection to enabling data intelligence in real time.
With this acquisition, Rubrik isn't just safeguarding data anymore — it's empowering it.
