Frontier Airlines has named its president James Dempsey as interim CEO, replacing Barry Biffle, effective immediately. Biffle, who has led the budget carrier since March 2016, will remain with the airline in an advisory role through the end of the year. The announcement comes as Frontier seeks new leadership to navigate ongoing financial and operational challenges.
Board Chair Bill Franke praised Dempsey’s leadership, noting his more than 10 years of experience at Frontier and his instrumental role in guiding the airline’s growth and strategic initiatives. “We believe Jimmy is uniquely qualified to guide our airline into the future,” Franke said.
Frontier has struggled to maintain profitability in the wake of the pandemic. Rising labor costs, shifting consumer preferences toward international and premium travel, and an oversupply of domestic flights have squeezed margins across the budget airline sector.
The airline reported a net loss of $190 million in the first nine months of 2025, a sharp decline from $31 million in net income during the same period last year. Frontier’s stock has fallen nearly 19% year to date, underperforming the NYSE Arca Airline Index, which has gained more than 6% over the same timeframe.
Under Biffle’s leadership, Frontier explored multiple merger opportunities with fellow budget carrier Spirit Airlines beginning in early 2022, though none of these discussions have yet resulted in a deal. Frontier has also experimented with initiatives to improve customer satisfaction, including offering more spacious seating options to appeal to passengers willing to pay for comfort.
Industry analysts note that smaller airlines like Frontier continue to face intense pressure from high fixed costs, fluctuating fuel prices, and competition from larger carriers, making consistent profitability challenging in a post-pandemic market.
Dempsey takes the helm at a critical juncture for Frontier. With experience spanning over a decade at the airline and a deep understanding of operational strategy, he will oversee efforts to stabilize finances, enhance customer offerings, and explore potential partnerships or mergers.
Biffle’s departure marks the end of nearly a decade at Frontier during which he guided the airline through both growth and adversity. As the aviation market continues to evolve, investors and industry observers will be closely watching Dempsey’s leadership and the airline’s ability to recover lost ground and strengthen its competitive position.
