President Donald Trump announced Monday his intention to nominate Dr. E.J. Antoni as the next commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Antoni, a prominent economist and current chief economist at the conservative Heritage Foundation, would step into the role following the abrupt firing of Erika McEntarfer earlier this month amid accusations of manipulated job data.
McEntarfer was dismissed on August 1, shortly after the BLS released a disappointing July jobs report showing slower-than-expected nonfarm payroll growth. The agency also revised job gains for May and June downward, sparking sharp criticism from the Trump administration, which accused McEntarfer of misrepresenting the strength of the labor market.
Antoni is widely recognized in conservative economic circles for his skepticism of official labor statistics and has been a vocal critic of the BLS methodology. His nomination has been heavily promoted by former Trump advisor Steve Bannon, who highlighted Antoni’s stance during a podcast following the July jobs report.
Trump praised Antoni on his social media platform, writing,
“Our economy is booming, and E.J. will ensure that the numbers released are honest and accurate. I know E.J. Antoni will do an incredible job in this new role. Congratulations, E.J.!”
Before assuming the commissioner role, Antoni must receive Senate confirmation. The BLS, as part of the Department of Labor, plays a crucial role in measuring key economic indicators like employment, unemployment, and wage trends, which influence financial markets, policy decisions, and public perception.
Antoni was also involved in Project 2025, a conservative policy agenda aimed at shaping a potential second Trump administration’s economic and regulatory priorities. His appointment signals a possible shift toward more politically influenced oversight of labor data, an area that economists and analysts will be watching closely.
Reliable labor statistics are critical for businesses, investors, and policymakers. The recent BLS reports have already contributed to market volatility and skepticism about economic recovery. With Antoni at the helm, stakeholders are eager to see how data transparency and methodology might evolve under his leadership.
