General Motors announced Tuesday a strategic move to relocate production of its flagship Cadillac Escalade to the Orion Assembly plant near Detroit, Michigan. Alongside this, GM will also expand manufacturing of its popular Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra light-duty pickups at the same facility.
The automaker confirmed production at Orion Assembly is set to begin in early 2027, a decision driven by robust customer demand across these models.
Currently, the Escalade is assembled in Arlington, Texas, while the Silverado and Sierra pickups are primarily built at GM’s Fort Wayne, Indiana plant. Although production at Fort Wayne will continue, the expansion at Orion signals GM’s intent to scale up manufacturing capacity in its home state of Michigan.
The move reflects an ongoing shift to optimize production in the U.S., leveraging Orion Assembly’s retooling efforts to accommodate both gas-powered vehicles and pickups.
This announcement aligns with GM’s broader commitment to invest $4 billion in American manufacturing facilities, originally unveiled in June 2024. The capital infusion targets upgrades, expansion, and modernization efforts across GM’s production network to better respond to market demands.
The investment follows increased U.S. trade protection measures, including 25% tariffs on imported vehicles and auto parts introduced earlier this year under President Donald Trump’s administration, encouraging domestic manufacturing growth.
Orion Assembly was initially slated to become GM’s second electric vehicle (EV) exclusive plant in the U.S., part of CEO Mary Barra’s 2021 vision for GM to offer only EVs by 2035. However, evolving consumer preferences and slower-than-anticipated EV adoption have prompted GM to adapt its production strategy.
GM now plans to maintain and expand gas-powered vehicle production at Orion alongside its EV ambitions, emphasizing flexibility to meet customer demand.
By diversifying production locations and models, GM aims to secure a stronger foothold in the competitive SUV and pickup truck markets. The Cadillac Escalade remains a luxury staple, while Silverado and Sierra continue to dominate light-duty pickup sales.
GM’s strategy underscores a broader industry trend of balancing EV transitions with continued gas-powered vehicle manufacturing to meet evolving market dynamics and regulatory environments.
