Apple has unveiled its most significant Mac refresh in over a year, introducing redesigned MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models powered by next-generation M5 chips — alongside a revamped Studio Display lineup. The update sharpens Apple’s focus on artificial intelligence performance, but it also comes with across-the-board price increases.
The move reflects a dual strategy: revive slowing Mac sales while repositioning the Mac as a serious AI computing platform capable of handling advanced workloads directly on the device rather than in the cloud.
Mac Prices Climb as Hardware Specs Expand
Apple raised starting prices across the MacBook lineup.
The 13-inch MacBook Air now begins at $1,099, up $100 from the prior $999 base price. The 15-inch version starts at $1,299, also a $100 increase. In exchange, Apple doubled the base storage to 512GB — a notable jump from the previous 256GB entry configuration.
On the professional side, the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 Pro chip now starts at $2,199. The 16-inch MacBook Pro with the top-tier M5 Max begins at $3,899, marking a $400 increase over its predecessor.
Apple also raised the storage baseline for Pro models. Systems equipped with M5 Pro now start at 1TB, while M5 Max configurations begin at 2TB. Given current NAND flash pricing and supply constraints — driven in part by surging demand from AI data centers — Apple appears to be repositioning its MacBook Pro line firmly in premium territory.
The pricing shift comes as the broader PC industry wrestles with margin compression and inventory normalization following post-pandemic demand swings. Apple, however, is leaning into higher average selling prices rather than competing aggressively on entry-level cost.
AI Performance Takes Center Stage
The most important change isn’t cosmetic — it’s architectural.
Apple says the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips deliver significant performance gains in AI and machine learning tasks. According to the company, large language model prompt processing is up to four times faster than comparable M4-based systems and as much as eight times faster than first-generation M1 machines.
The gains stem from an upgraded Neural Engine, increased GPU core counts and expanded unified memory bandwidth. High-end M5 Max configurations reportedly support up to 128GB of unified memory, giving developers room to run sizable AI models locally without constant reliance on cloud infrastructure.
This push toward on-device AI is strategic. As enterprise customers and privacy-conscious users seek to process sensitive data without uploading it to remote servers, Apple is emphasizing the Mac’s ability to execute generative AI workloads offline — from code completion and video rendering to document summarization and image generation.
Battery efficiency remains a core differentiator. Apple claims the new MacBook Pro models maintain up to 22 hours of battery life despite performance improvements, reinforcing its advantage over many Windows-based AI laptops that often sacrifice runtime for computational power.
Mac Sales Need a Lift
The timing of the refresh is critical.
Apple’s Mac revenue declined nearly 7% year over year to $8.39 billion during the most recent holiday quarter, missing analyst projections that were closer to $9 billion. The company is seeking to reaccelerate upgrade cycles, particularly among users still running Intel-based Macs or early M1 systems introduced in 2020.
Industry analysts estimate that tens of millions of Macs in use today are more than four years old — prime candidates for replacement as software demands increase and AI integration becomes more widespread.
By bundling higher base storage, faster chips and AI positioning into a single refresh, Apple is attempting to create urgency around upgrading.
Studio Display Overhaul Targets Creative Pros
Alongside the MacBooks, Apple introduced a redesigned Studio Display lineup, effectively replacing the aging Pro Display XDR with a two-tier structure.
The base Studio Display starts at $1,599. A higher-end Studio Display XDR model begins at $3,299 and adds mini-LED backlighting, higher sustained brightness, improved contrast ratios and a faster refresh rate suited for video editors, designers and post-production professionals.
The display update complements the M5 launch by reinforcing Apple’s positioning of the Mac ecosystem as a premium creative and AI workstation environment.
Balancing Premium Strategy With Broader Reach
Earlier in the week, Apple refreshed a lower-cost iPhone model, signaling attention to value-conscious buyers. The Mac launch, however, clearly targets higher-end customers.
There is growing speculation that Apple may introduce a more affordable MacBook variant to capture first-time Mac buyers, Windows switchers and students. Such a move would round out the strategy — protecting margins at the top while widening the funnel at the bottom.
For now, though, the headline is clear: Apple is betting that AI capability, expanded storage and performance gains justify higher price tags.
By emphasizing on-device intelligence and hardware-software integration, Apple is differentiating its Macs from commodity PCs while reinforcing its long-term thesis — that the future of personal computing will be AI-first, privacy-centric and increasingly powered by custom silicon.
Whether consumers accept higher prices in exchange for that vision will determine whether this refresh reignites Mac revenue growth in the quarters ahead.
